Beyond the Textbook: How AR & VR Are Reshaping Medical Education

Medical education has always depended on repetition, exposure and feedback. For decades, that meant cadavers, mannequins and the slow apprenticeship of the ward. Augmented and virtual reality are changing the economics of that exposure.

In our work training healthcare students, we found that AR-based early clinical exposure lets learners rehearse a procedure dozens of times before touching a patient. The value is not the headset — it is the number of safe repetitions per learner.

But immersive tech is not magic. The evidence base is still maturing, and poorly designed modules can create false confidence. The discipline is in measuring outcomes: does the simulation transfer to the bedside? That is the question every program should be able to answer.

My recommendation for institutions starting out: begin with one high-frequency, high-risk skill — airway management or CPR — build a tight feedback loop, and measure transfer rigorously before scaling.
