Mentoring 5000+ Innovators: What MedTech Hackathons Taught Me

Over the years I have mentored more than five thousand innovators across medicine, engineering, design and management. The single biggest predictor of success is not talent — it is proximity to the real problem.

Winning hackathon teams almost always have one member who has personally witnessed the clinical pain point. That grounding keeps the team honest when the engineering gets seductive.

The second pattern is interdisciplinary respect. The best teams pair a clinician who understands the need with an engineer who can build and a designer who can make it usable. When those three respect each other's expertise, the output is transformative.

My advice to any innovator: fall in love with the problem, not your solution. The solution will change a dozen times. The problem is your north star.
